BACKGROUND

The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation Inc. seeks two highly motivated Scientific Data Analyst & Programmers to tackle a grand challenge as to how to effectively manage the institution-wide heterogeneous data for the benefit of scientific research.

The Noble Foundation is a not-for-profit research organization located in Ardmore, Oklahoma, USA. Its mission is to influence agriculture by exploring and improving production agriculture techniques and advancing plant science through research and discovery. This mission is addressed through its 23 research and consultation programs in its three major operating divisions: Plant Biology (PB), Forage Improvement (FID) and Agriculture (Ag). PB carries out basic research in multiple fields including biochemistry, genetics, genomics, cell biology and computational biology; FID focuses on cultivar development through breeding, molecular marker design and field plot evaluation; whereas Ag conducts research in agronomy and provides no-cost consultation services to farmers and ranchers in 47 counties in the Texoma region (northern Texas and southern Oklahoma). The Noble Foundation is one of the largest plant science research institutes in the USA, presently employing approximately 420 full time employees, of whom about 260 are scientific researchers.

In recent years, significant investments have been made to improve the institute's scientific computing and data storage infrastructure. The successful candidates of the mentioned two positions will work in a team environment to plan, evaluate, customize and develop commercial and/or in-house software tools and databases aiming to organize and integrate a large diversity of scientific data across the Foundation, including but not limited to sequences, microarrays, mass spectrums, genotypes and phenotypes, markers, field plots, geographic and agriculture survey records, etc. The successful candidate will report to Dr. Ji He (Director of Scientific Computing) and will work closely with various core facilities and research groups in the Foundation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates should possess programming skills in at least one major programming language (e.g. C/C++/C#, Java and Perl), competency with relational databases, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge in bioinformatics, o-mics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics), plant-related fields such as plant biology, crop science and forage improvement is desirable.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Bioinformatics or a related scientific field and must have extensive knowledge in database programming for large-scale data manipulation. Candidates with related B.S. degree and with at least three years of direct experience in the mentioned fields will also be considered.
