The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced Bioinformatics Systems Analyst to support the Genomic Standards Group. Will be responsible for the high-quality curation of genomic and metagenomic metadata as well as architecture of genome project ontologies and controlled vocabularies for more effective annotation. Will develop and improve tools for metadata annotation, analysis and visualization and add new features to the software and systems. Will interact with team members as well as a variety of technical, administrative and scientific staff. Position reports to the Genome Standards Group Leader.

The selected candidate will be hired at the Analyst 2 or 3 classification depending upon the candidate's level of experience and qualifications.

    Specific Job Duties:
    • Interface with end-users and collaborators to gather feedback and requirements.
    • Develop and improve tools for metadata annotation, analysis and visualization and add new features to current software and systems.
    • Perform high-quality curation of genomic and metagenomic metadata as well as architecture of genome project ontologies and controlled vocabularies for more effective annotation.
    • Collect and organize metagenome metadata (from internal and public databases, collaborators, etc.)
    • Read genome project literature and retrieve specific data for entry to the corresponding databases.
    • Create, maintain and document controlled vocabularies pertinent to genome project data, including addition of terms and term relationships for quality and control of annotations.
    • Present annotation statistics, metrics and future plans to project team members and other scientists in oral and written forms.
    • Troubleshoot systems and data problems and exercise independent judgment to select appropriate solutions.
    • Analyze and propose improvements for the automation of tasks and pipelines and communicate those suggestions to the development team.
Essential Duties for the Analyst 3 - In addition to the required duties for a level 2, the Analyst 3 will:
    • Work at a higher level of independence and responsibilities in carrying out assignments.
    • Develop and implement substantial, known or novel, computational methods to improve the analysis capabilities and output of the group.
    • Troubleshoot more complex systems and data analysis problems.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field with a minimum of two years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree preferred.
    • Strong background in bioinformatics, molecular biology and genomics.
