    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    The Sanger Institute is Europe's leading genome research institute. Funded primarily by the Wellcome Trust, we use high-throughput genomics-based techniques to investigate host and pathogen genetics. The pathogen group is applying large-scale sequence-based technology to pathogen populations to track transmission pathways and identify determinants of drug resistance and virulence.

    Base4 is a fast-growing scientific startup company developing high-speed single molecule detection platforms for use in the biomedical industry. Founded in 2007, our focus is on the optimisation and rapid commercialisation of devices for DNA sequencing, point-of-care diagnostics and genetic analysis, along with novel approaches to sample preparation, data handling and bioinformatics. Working in collaboration with academia, we are quickly realising world-leading technologies with the potential for significant impact across the medical and life science industries.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are looking for an experienced software developer to work as part of a TSB-funded collaboration between Base4, the Sanger Institute and the University of Cambridge, to apply Base4's technologies to the rapid diagnosis of infectious disease. The successful applicant will work on the analysis of bacterial genomes to discover and optimize discriminatory patterns, and on the output of the technology platform to detect, decode and identify those patterns in clinical samples. The ideal candidate will have experience with digital signal processing and embedded systems.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A PhD degree in computer science or engineering (or equivalent industry experience).
    • Knowledge and experience of at least two programming languages, preferably Perl/Python (for initial sequence analysis) and C/C++ (pattern recognition and analysis).
    • Practical knowledge and experience of signal processing and/or pattern recognition.
    • Experience with design and implementation of digital signal processing algorithms.
    • Evidence of successful delivery of large or complex software systems.
    • Knowledge and experience of UNIX/LINUX on an advanced level.
    • Excellent communication skills to be able to elicit complex requirements from, and convey complex information to, groups with different levels of technical knowledge
    • Excellent problem-solving skills.
    • A keen attention to detail.
    • Ability to quickly adapt to new problems and ideas.

    PREFERENCES

    • Knowledge of biological/sequence-based analysis.
    • Experience with systems based on real-time operating systems.
    • Experience with embedded software systems.

    LOCALE

    The successful candidate will work between The Sanger Institute Campus about 7 miles south of Cambridge, and Base4, located on the University of Cambridge West Campus, spending time in both locations.

    TERMS

    This position is fixed-term until 31st December 2013.

    COMPENSATION

    Salary range GBP 27316 to GBP 37690 per annum dependent on experience.
