BACKGROUND

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

The Production Software team's central remit is to provide scientific software to support the sequencing and genomic analysis work done at the Sanger Institute. We are a highly visible team, providing high quality, scalable software that plays a central role in the continuing success of the Institute. We are involved in a wide variety of projects ranging from laboratory automation to medical informatics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking for a developer who can work in close collaboration with laboratory staff on site, solving daily problems and improving the user experience. You will respond promptly to user requests and find usable solutions within a short time frame. These solutions can be changes to procedures or a need for new software. You will also give input to the development team about major changes that could improve the efficiency or solve common problems. The role will involve aspects of web development and devops activities.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have very good people skills and will be able to take quick decisions based on previous experience and methodical thinking. You will have proven system administration skills and will have worked with web development and/or user experience. Good knowledge of CSS, Ajax and other standard web methods is essential. You should have a clear understanding of tools similar to Puppet, Capistrano, Chef, Nginx and Nagios.

PREFERENCES

Experience with Rails would be an advantage.

Salary Range: GBP 27316 to GBP 37690 per annum dependent on experience
