    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Senior Scientist, Bioinformatics to join our Biotherapeutics Research department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. As a Senior Scientist, Bioinformatics you will design and execute independent research that supports R&D projects. The Informatics Scientist is primarily responsible for performing and managing scientific and technical activities, which may also include responsibility for the management of scientific staff. Has the early ability to plan and execute collaborations. Focus on innovation and driving novel approaches that positively impact project performance is key to Senior Scientist level.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Independently performs scientific experiments with a predefined goal including developing new methodologies, protocols and/or test procedures that that contribute to research goals and reflect expert knowledge.
    • Demonstrates early understanding of research or development team goals and works effectively toward achieving them; Has ability to participate as representative on multiple project teams and contribute to defining expertise-related aspects of overall program goals
    • Prepares clear technical reports, publications and oral presentations. Independently communicate results in the form of reports and or presentations; Presents responsibly and defends own work at scientific meetings; May deliver updates to senior level management in context of overall project goals
    • Demonstrates expertise in a specific scientific area or technology; Evaluate and propose new technologies and concepts, including recommending specific capital purchases of instrumentation, hardware and software; Demonstrates independent thinking, e.g., by proposing and implementing new experimental designs and concepts that contribute to research goals and reflect expert knowledge; Identifies potential patentable inventions
    • Keeps abreast of relevant literature and serves as resource in area of specialized expertise; Develops and maintains outside visibility
    • Assumes responsibility for direct reports as needed including recruiting, managing, mentoring and developing scientific staff; May direct and oversee experimental design and results of technicians and junior level scientists
    • Complies with all applicable regulations; Ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies
    • Contributes to departmental administration; Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Required Education and Experience:
    • Ph.D. Degree with postdoctoral experience (preferred) or 7 years experience as an Informatic Scientist with a track record of results that impact programs, team directions, group activities/procedures, etc
    Eligibility Requirements:
    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
    • Must be willing to submit to a background investigation, including verification of your past employment, criminal history, and educational background
    • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
    • Must be 18 years of age or older
    PREFERENCES:
    Demonstrates a broad knowledge and expertise of bioinformatics field, including:
    • Expertise with computational bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, SMITH-WATERMAN, pfam, clustalW, etc
    • Expertise with genetic databases such as NCBI, EMBL, ENSEMBL, IMGT, etc
    • Familiarity with UNIX/LINUX based computational systems and tools such as perl, python, etc
    • Familiarity with database structures and tools such as Oracle and SQL
    Demonstrates a broad knowledge molecular biology and immunology, including:
    • Expertise in designing and utilization of cloning and expression vectors
    • Expertise in immunoglobulin genome structure and engineering
    • Familiarity with NextGen Sequencing methods and tools, especially 454 sequencing
    • Commitment to working closely, effectively, and accountably in a results oriented interdisciplinary team environment
    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in an inter-disciplinary environment
    • Appropriate level of understanding of applicable regulations
