BACKGROUND

The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) is a national centre funded by the BBSRC in partnership with EEDA and Norfolk Local Authorities. TGAC is specialised in the study of plants, microbes and animal genomes with the view to facilitate the development of new genomics-based biology in academic and commercial sectors. TGAC is also a centre of excellence in bioinformatics with a focus in genome informatics and the analysis of next-generation sequencing data. The Bioinformatics division is organised in three teams: Sequencing Informatics, Computational Genomics and Genome Analysis. These teams work closely together to deliver the high-quality data, develop the informatics tools and contribute to the scientific programme of the Centre, which will be overseen by an Independent Scientific Advisory Board managed by the BBSRC.

The aim of this Scientific Programmer role in the Genome Analysis team is to work within the Analysis Software Development group to design, implement and deploy the analysis tools required for the annotation of genomic sequences. The job holder will have a MSc degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or in similar subject and experience in processing and analysing biological data. The goal is to develop tools and pipelines for the analysis of bacterial, animal and plant genomes and build interfaces to allow viewing and manipulation of the data. Next generation sequencing is now being utilised in a diverse array of research areas including gene expression, epigenomics and metagenomics. The key challenge for the job holder will be to devise computational approaches to facilitate interpretation and integration of sequence data.

REQUIREMENTS

The candidate will have a MSc degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or similar and a strong background in computer programming. Experience of running software on computer clusters, knowledge of SQL and statistical methods would be beneficial. The successful candidate will be proactive with the ability to make autonomous decisions, have good interpersonal skills and work well as part of a team. They will have excellent communication skills with a commitment to quality and attention to detail.
