    BACKGROUND

    The Centre for High-throughput Biology (CHiBi) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver is looking for an exceptional candidate to carry out research in the field of neurodegeneration. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or Huntington's disease are caused by the accumulation of protein deposits in the human brain (so called proteinopathies). The mechanisms by which protein deposits cause neuronal death are not fully understood. The selected candidate will work on a multi-center project that tries to identify genes that are able to suppress neurodegeneration in several or all proteinopathies. The project is carried out in collaboration with Drs. David Rubinsztein (http://www.cimr.cam.ac.uk/investigators/rubinsztein/index.html),
    and Cahir O'Kane (http://www.gen.cam.ac.uk/research/okane.html), both from the University of Cambridge UK, and is funded by COEN (http://coen.org/home.html). The selected candidate will join an existing team and wider community of computational biologists at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develop and implement strategies for the analysis of genome-scale screens for modifiers of neurodegenerative diseases
    • Develop and implement strategies for the prediction of new modifiers that can be tested experimentally
    • Communicate results effectively to a diverse community of internal and external scientists

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. in bioinformatics/computational biology, mathematics, computer science, or related field
    • Advanced capability and research experience with machine learning approaches such as neural networks, support vector machines or Bayesian networks
    • Strong understanding of genetics and genomics
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Familiarity with genomic data, tools, and datasets
    • Strong initiative and ability to take ownership of assigned tasks and projects
