OVERVIEW
Scisco Genetics Inc., a spin-off from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, is seeking a senior software developer. The successful candidate will be part of a small team of developers and biologists contributing to the design, implementation, and testing of scientific data management and analysis applications used for collecting, analyzing, reporting, and sharing genetic and genomics data.
The goals of the company include improving software solutions in support of genetic data acquisition for application to clinical medicine. Through these solutions, the company is contributing high quality, low cost data from complex immune system genetics as a key niche in studies of genetics and complex disease. The Company is actively furthering development of our Genetics Management System (GeMS), a software suite now used in support of laboratory activities. This system includes tools for data acquisition, archiving, querying, retrieval, visualization, integration and management, web-based linkage tools for data sharing and tools for electronic communication, and new analytical tools for interpretation of complex DNA sequence data.
Support for this opportunity is currently available for 4 years through funding from the National Institutes of Health. Long-term goals include expanding a successful company within the framework of opportunities now emerging for informatics and laboratory solutions in support of medical genetics.RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for all aspects of the software development life cycle, from collecting software requirements to supporting a solution in production
- Apply Agile software development skills to create software that works in a dynamic environment with changing requirements
- Design, refactor, implement, test, and support Java code
- Write maintainable, scalable, extensible software using open source tools
- Participate in design and code reviews.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:- At least 4-5 years experience developing Java applications
- Experience developing Eclipse RCP applications and/or Eclipse plug-ins
- Experience developing client/server or n-tier applications backed by a database
- Understand Agile software development and apply it throughout the development life cycle
- Able to work independently, but also happy to work with and support fellow team members
- Creative and interested in science. Desire to learn conceptually about state of the art applications of genetics and genomics in medicine
- Languages: Java, XML
- Database: SQL, JDBC
- Tools: Eclipse IDE, source control, unit testing, bug tracking
PREFERENCES
Bonus Skills:- Languages: Scripting languages such as Groovy, Python, Ruby, etc.
- Technologies: Hibernate
- Database: PostgreSQL
- Tools: Build, and continuous integration tools such as Ant, Maven, Hudson, Bamboo, etc., Eclipse PDE, Eclipse IDE testing tools
