    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Organization: GN-Genomics Division

    The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for a Computational Biologist Postdoctoral Researcher to focus on the analysis of genome groups (pangenomes). The successful candidate will be responsible for the metabolic reconstruction and analysis of pangenomes, and the participation in the development of tools and methods for efficient analysis and visualizations. He/she will provide feedback and participate in the development of algorithms and software tools for data handling, analysis and visualization for comparative analysis of pangenomes. Will work independently and contributing as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists and software developers. Position reports to the Omics Group lead.

    Specific Job Duties:
    Essential-
    • Perform metabolic reconstruction, metabolic modeling and comparative genome analysis.
    •  Participate in the development of tools and methods for the efficient analysis and visualizations.
    •  Implement, configure and run scripts for processing and analyzing large scale data.
    •  Document research results and prepare for publication.
    Marginal-
    • Attend and present technical status reports at group meetings.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Key Success Factors:
    •  Ph.D. in Life Sciences or Computer Science with some relevant research experience in both areas
    •  Strong background in bioinformatics, molecular biology and genomics
    •  Experience with methods of analysis of biological sequence data especially next-generation sequence data
    •  Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data
    •  Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills to make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to moderately complex problems
    • Effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results
    •  Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers
