    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Organization: GN-Genomics Division

    The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced software developer. In cooperation with other members of the Sequencing Informatics group, will design, develop and implement software solutions and offer support for the sequencing process spanning from the sample acquisition stage to sequence data generation. Position reports to the Sequencing Informatics group lead.

    Specific Job Duties:
    Essential-
    • Design, implement, test, and deploy extensions to, and new versions of, the Sequencing Process Systems. This includes:
      • Configure and develop the JGI's Laboratory Information Management System.
      • Design, implement, and test associated secondary systems;
      • Design, implement, and test the web services used to connect to the rest of the JGI's Integrated Tracking System; and
      • If needed, implementation of reports for users.
    •  Provide responsive customer support for new and existing sequencing process systems, including:
      • Assist users with the prompt resolution of data entry errors;
      • Resolve software malfunctions and other system needs;
      • Resolve custom user and data retrieval requests; and
      • Possible weekend technical support when needed.
    •  Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering.
    •  Communicate regularly with customers and supervisory staff about plans, designs, and progress.
    •  Provide status updates in regular team meetings, and coordinate development work with other members of the Sequencing Process Support team and (when appropriate) Sequencing Informatics group.
    •  Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
    Marginal-
    •  Mentor and cross-train other team members in software development and design.
    •  Stay current with new sequencing technologies.
    • Train biologists and other lab staff on how to use production process support systems.
    •  Analyze the impact of process, hardware or software changes on production line performance.

    REQUIREMENTS

    •  B.S. in Computer Science or a related scientific or technical field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of five years related experience
    •  Demonstrated experience with the following: Java, JBoss
    •  Demonstrated experience with database programming and interfaces, preferably in Oracle
    •  Full life-cycle software development experience with the ability to work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities
    •  Ability to effectively learn and apply new technology concepts to troubleshoot and solve problems and challenges of a diverse scope
    •  Effective time management, organization, and planning skills
    •  Talent for working well under short deadlines and handling multiple tasks simultaneously
    •  Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment

    PREFERENCES

    •  Demonstrated experience with the following: Groovy, Tomcat, Apache, JavaScript, Jasper Reports or similar reporting framework, Perl or Ruby, Subversion or other version control software
    • Demonstrated experience in providing support for production software systems
    •  Experience developing web-based GUIs
    •  Experience working with scientific users
    •  Experience working with bioinformatics tools and/or analysis techniques, ideally involving next-generation sequencing platforms
