Organization: GN-Genomics Division
The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced Software Developer / Engineer. As part of a software engineering team, the successful candidate will develop new bioinformatics tools and approaches for data publication, investigation, and visualization. The incumbent will work collaboratively with scientists from multiple backgrounds, and will play a central role in the development of software packages for biological data analysis. Will work on problems of a diverse scope, exercise independent judgment and select appropriate methods and techniques for solving and recommending solutions. Must demonstrate detailed knowledge and strong technical ability in full lifecycle software development, database design and access, web user interface design, development and deployment.
The selected candidate will be hired at the Software Developer 3 or 4 classification level depending upon the candidate's level of experience and qualifications.
Duties:
Essential --- Design and develop software and algorithms for the Genome Portal Group.
- Interface with end-users to gather feedback and requirements and design effective solutions compatible with existing systems.
- Participate in system architectural design.
- Work with scientific customers to define needs and priorities.
- Participate in formal and informal design and code reviews.
- Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse problems.
- Operate at a higher level of independence and responsibility when carrying out assignments.
- Serve as a technical lead and key contributor called upon to solve highly technical, complex problems.
- Mentor and train other team members in areas of expertise.
REQUIREMENTS
Key Success Factors:- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, or a related technical or scientific field, or equivalent experience, and a minimum of 5 years related experience.
- Demonstrated success designing and implementing significant systems and software in a scientific or technical environment.
- Proven capacity to do innovative and applied work.
- Proficiency with Java, as well as significant experience in relation database, and Web development.
- C/C++ and/or Perl in a Unix environment is a plus
- Experience utilizing multiple platforms and operating systems.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems and recommend actions.
- Advanced analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently as well as a part of a diverse team.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field with a minimum of 8 years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree (Masters/PhD) preferred.
- Genomic analysis software experience, and knowledge of various bioinformatics algorithms related to sequence analysis.
- Previous experience as a top developer on an open source genomic visualization project or genomic web portal.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex web component and database systems issues.
