RESPONSIBILITIES

•  Design and develop software and algorithms for the Comparative Genomics Group.
• Interface with end-users to gather feedback and requirements and design effective solutions compatible with existing systems.
•  Participate in system architectural design.
• Work with scientific customers to define needs and priorities.
• Participate in formal and informal design and code reviews.
• Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse problems.

•  Operate at a higher level of independence and responsibility when carrying out assignments.
•  Serve as a technical lead and key contributor called upon to solve highly technical, complex problems.
•  Mentor and train other team members in areas of expertise.

REQUIREMENTS

•  B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, or a related technical or scientific field, or equivalent experience, and a minimum of 5 years related experience.
•  Demonstrated success designing and implementing significant systems and software in a scientific or technical environment.
•  Demonstrated experience in genomic analysis; significant research accomplishments, such as strong publication record.
•  Proven capacity to do innovative and applied work.
•  Proficiency with Java, C and Perl in a Unix environment as well as significant experience in Oracle and/or MySQL database, and Web development.
•  Experience utilizing multiple platforms and operating systems.
•  Broad understanding of bioinformatics tools used for genome analysis and gene function prediction.
•  Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems and recommend actions.
•  Advanced analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
•  Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including public-speaking and presentation skills.
•  Demonstrated ability to work well independently as well as a part of a diverse team.

•  Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field with a minimum of eight years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree (Masters/PhD) preferred.
•  Extensive genomic analysis software experience, and substantial knowledge of various bioinformatics algorithms related to sequence analysis.
•  Previous experience as a top developer on an open source genomic visualization project or genomic web portal.
•  Ability to troubleshoot complex web component and database systems issues.
