BACKGROUND
Who we are:- Research team at VIB & University of Leuven led by prof. Kevin J. Verstrepen. Focus on genomics, genetics, epigenetics, transcriptomics and evolution, both wet-lab and computational research.
- For more information, see our recent publications in Science, Cell, Nature, Genome Research, NAR, (copies available from lab website http://www.kuleuven.be/verstrepen)
- Exciting research topics that may lead to (co-) first authorship of high-profile publications
- Fulltime appointment as postdoctoral fellow at VIB / K.U.Leuven, a highly-ranked research institute with competitive payscale and benefits (health insurance, sports facilities, vacation ... )
- State-of-the art infrastructure
- Direct collaboration with our team of wet-lab scientists who are generating novel data for you to analyze (whole-genome sequences, RNAseq transcriptome data, Illumina, 454, PacBio...)
- Opportunities for personal development (courses, seminars, lectures ...
- Job is available immediately, starting date is negotiable
RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific research topics for this position:
The successful candidate will work on two main topics:
1) We are investigating the complex genetics underlying ethanol tolerance in yeast. The wet-lab scientist are generating and sequencing more than 50 novel yeast strains that are more resistant to ethanol. You will need to assemble and analyze the genome sequences and transcriptomics data and help to identify the mutations and physiological processes underlying ethanol resistance. Since we are obtaining high-quality sequences (150x coverage), these genome sequences are also useful to study evolution (Ka/Ks, CNVs, structural variation, horizontal gene transfer,...). In addition, we are also obtaining RNAseq transcriptome data.
2) Based on our experience in yeast (see publications in Science and Nature Genetics), our wet-lab team is sequencing variable tandem repeats located within human genes in specific patients. You will help to identify all repeats, analyze sequencing data (comparative genomics) and identify mutations that underlie diseases.REQUIREMENTS
Who we are looking for:- A motivated and talented postdoc with a strong research output (publications)
- Experience with programming, statistics, next-gen sequencing, transcriptomics, sequence evolution and/or database construction is a plus.
- Working knowledge of English (English is the primary language in the lab)
