BACKGROUND
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is a premier center for research and treatment of potentially fatal childhood diseases, including cancer and certain blood, genetic, and immunodeficiency disorders. The hospital's mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Currently, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has an opening for a Bioinformatics Associate Research Scientist (Job Number 20784).
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Bioinformatics Associate Research Scientist takes a lead role in data analysis, method development, software evaluation, and training in order to advance biomedical research programs at SJCRH. Examines data from next-generation sequencing instruments, microarrays, proteomics, public databases and other sources, and performs analyses typically including discovery of genetic variants, differential gene expression, abnormal regulation, and disease associations. Maintains knowledge of current bioinformatics methods, modifying them or combining them as needed for specific goals. Compares available academic, open source, or commercial software to determine which are most appropriate for a given project. Provides help with scientific software, databases, and other computational resources to hospital staff. Ensures that efficient and prompt help is provided to SJCRH investigators.
REQUIREMENTS
A Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or related field is required. Ph.D must include research related to bioinformatics (such as analysis of sequence data, microarrays, SNPs, image data, proteomics data, or biological pathways; development of algorithms, statistical methods, or scientific software); OR If Ph.D with no bioinformatics research, then two (2) years of pre-doctoral or post-doctoral experience in Computational Biology or Bioinformatics research is required. Experience with programming languages such as Perl, C, or Java required.
