BACKGROUND

Conduct novel informatics research and consultation in collaboration with K-INBRE network researchers, and design sophisticated data management schemes in support of data intensive biomedical research. This position will also be responsible for instructing students and researchers in the theory and application of informatics methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES

50% - Conduct novel informatics research and consultation in collaboration with K-INBRE network researchers. Activities will entail diverse research applications across the expanse of bioinformatics, cheminformatics, and computational biology, with a primary focus on the application of data mining and modeling techniques to genomics, chemical genomics, image processing and other biomedical studies that may arise.

25% - Design sophisticated data management schemes in support of data intensive biomedical research. Duties include addressing the information management needs of biomedical collaborators engaged in data-intensive research, helping to formulate suitable for facile data storage/retrieval, and overseeing administration and maintenance of such resources.

25% - Instruct students and researchers in the theory and application of informatics methods. The specialist will be expected to develop and deliver workshops relating the use of resources provided within the K-INBRE bioinformatics core. Deliver seminars and guest lectures in bioinformatics theory and application. Mentor students and researchers in the effective application of computational techniques toward practical biomedical objectives.

REQUIREMENTS

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and/or educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of other accomplishments addressed in the resume, and (3) information provided from references.

RQ1: PhD in bioinformatics, biology, computer science, biochemistry, or closely related discipline.
RQ2: At least 3 yrs experience in computer programming (e.g., C, C++, FORTRAN, java, javascript, JSP, PERL, SQL, Oracle, etc)
RQ3: Established track record of bioinformatics or cheminformatics research as shown by at least five peer-reviewed publications in these fields.

PREFERENCES

PF1: Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
PF2: Evidence of ability to work independently with attention to detail.
PF3: Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team-based environment.
PF4: Experience in collaborating with experimental biology researchers, especially in the areas of genomics, chemical genomics, and image processing.
PF5: Established track record of applying data mining and statistically-based validation techniques to research problems.
PF6: Experience in the development of relational database schemes for the management of scientific data.
