BACKGROUND
The Bioinformatics Research Laboratory (BRL) http://www.brl.bcm.tmc.edu, directed by Prof. Aleksandar Milosavljevic, has an immediate opening for a highly motivated bioinformatics analyst in the area of genomic and epigenomic informatics. BRL functions as the Epigenomic Data Analysis and Coordination Center for the NIH Epigenomics Roadmap Initiative (http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-09/notd-na092908.php). The BRL has recently launched a Bioinformatics Core Laboratory to support researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, and is seeking a skilled bioinformatician to support client projects. This position represents an exciting opportunity to contribute to a variety of disease-focused projects, including cancer genomics and Epigenomics, and basic-science projects aimed at understanding the biology of genomes and epigenomes. The Bioinformatics Analyst will participate in a variety of projects using the latest analytical methods and will participate in tool integration and deployment using the Genboree Workbench (http://www.genboree.org).RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in multiple projects involving integration of high-volume data sets, design and implementation of data processing pipelines, and analyses of genomic and epigenomic data. Typical data processing pipelines will be implemented using a programming language such as Ruby and the Genboree REST Application Programming Interface (http://www.genboree.org).REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will have a BS in biology or a related field and a computer science degree or significant programming experience, and 1-2 years' experience in bioinformatics. Programming experience in a UNIX/Linux environment using programming languages such as Ruby, Perl, Python, and relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL is required. The candidate must have experience in programming and high-throughput analysis of biological data, preferably of massively parallel sequencing and other genomic data. Experience with proteomic data would also be of interest but not strictly required. The candidate should have experience in high-throughput data analysis and be familiar with widely used genomic databases and software. In addition, the candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be capable of working within a team of biologists and programmers. Due to the nature of the position, the candidate must have excellent written and verbal English skills. Experience with object-oriented programming in Java and experience with internet programming (JavaScript, Ajax, HTML, Apache, Tomcat) is desirable.HOW TO APPLY
Please submit a CV and the names of three references to insure full consideration. Qualified candidates will be asked to complete an online programming test. Online test results will be used to evaluate candidates and serve as the basis for a formal interview in Houston, TX to meet the lab director and lab members. At the on-site interview, you will be asked to complete a comprehensive three-hour programming test consisting of three parts. Please submit CV & references by email to: Ms. Elke Norwig-Eastaugh, One Baylor Plaza, BCM 225, Houston, TX 77030 at: elken[at]bcm.edu.POLICY
