    Opportunity: Principal / Senior Database Administrator @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute--Hinxton, Cambridge, UK

    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    We are looking to recruit a Principal / Senior Database Administrator within the Database Services Team. The Database Services team, part of the IT Systems Support group, is primarily responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of diverse relational databases (Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL) in support of leading scientific research projects undertaken by various bioinformatics groups within Sanger Institute.

    The successful candidate will assume the role of technical lead in architecting and developing database solutions for the Institute's scientific endeavours and work with the DB Manager to lead DBA projects. He/She will have lead technical responsibility in conjunction with DB Manager for databases representing projects within the Institute from creation through to implementation and maintenance. This work will involve database development life-cycle activities undertaken within the team by collaborating and co-ordinating activities with Database, Bioinformatics, Corporate Services and System Support Groups, and with collaborators beyond the Institute to ensure the databases are delivered to agreed timescales and specifications. There will be opportunity to use the latest versions of RDBMS technologies for these complex databases, which scale up to hundreds of Terabytes.

    Applications will be considered for either the Principal or Senior position depending on the level of knowledge, skills and experience.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The right candidate should have a degree in biology or a degree in computer science and some understanding of biological theory. You will have proven expertise and hands-on experience of using Oracle RDBMS technology.
    You should also have in-depth experience in diverse RDBMS technologies with a detailed understanding of systems analysis, relational data modeling and database design and development. You will be able to productively use SQL and diverse database management tools, and administer multiple databases in a proactive and efficient manner including backup and recovery, performance monitoring and tuning. Experience in scripting languages e.g. shell scripting, Perl, PL/SQL for ongoing development, enhancement and maintenance of databases is also required.

    The right candidate will have in-depth experience in troubleshooting/problem solving and in assisting customers on issues relating to RDBMS and SQL tuning in UNIX/Linux environment. For this you will need excellent communication skills (verbal and written), the willingness to work collaboratively in a team setting and a high degree of initiative and self motivation.

    PREFERENCES

    It would be desirable if you have some experience with or knowledge of one or more of the following areas:
    • Deployment, maintenance and upgrades of Oracle RAC and ASM storage up to 11g
    • High-availability architectures (e.g. Oracle Data Guard, MySQL replicas) and managing large databases
    • Data Warehousing including table partitioning strategies and materialized views
    • Implementation and maintenance of InnoDB/MyISAM backups and restores
    • Oracle RMAN backup strategies including restores under different circumstances
    • Experience of database upgrades of Oracle/MySQL and co-ordination of activities to perform H/W upgrades including OS, network, storage firmware patch updates etc.
    • Database disaster recovery planning and implementation

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is one of the world's leading institutes in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease. To support this diverse research work, the IT function at WTSI operates on a vast scale, amongst the largest operations in the world with multiple Petabytes of disk storage and over 14000 cores of computing capability. Currently, Database Services team maintains more than 150 database instances, predominantly Oracle and MySQL instances with over 300 Terabytes of storage spread over around 20 servers.

    COMPENSATION

    Principal Database Administrator salary range - GBP 37140 to GBP 48944 pa / Senior Database Administrator salary range - GBP 27589 to GBP 38067 pa dependent on experience.
