    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Zhao Bioinformatics Lab at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. (http://www.noble.org) is seeking a Bioinformatics Research Analyst/Scientific Programmer to conduct research and development in bioinformatics with a focus on "metabolic/biochemical" informatics.

    Principal Responsibilities:
    The successful candidate will join the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Xuechun Zhao to develop novel algorithms and software to facilitate the identification of plant metabolites (including lipids) from m/z and intensity values in mass spectrometry (MS), MS/MS and MSE spectra data, and the functional annotation of these plant natural products by mining the mass spectrometry profiles along with large-scale functional "omics" data. The successful candidate will focus on 1) the development of a series of innovative MS signature matching algorithms to determine the chemical structure and/or consisting structure units/motifs of an unknown metabolite/lipid by utilizing the MS spectral signatures of theoretical and experimental characteristic spectra fingerprints/libraries; 2) to annotate plant metabolite /lipid based on co-expression pattern analysis of metabolite-gene or metabolite-protein associations, pathway analysis, and co-localization analysis, etc.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • M.S. degree in quantitative sciences, engineering or related life sciences field
    • Independent problem solving skills
    • Understanding of biological research and the ability to develop applications
    • Excellence in mathematics and computer algorithm development
    • Have good communication skills, strong team-work spirit, and self-learning abilities

    PREFERENCES

    • Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Genomics, Chemistry, Plant Biology or highly-related field
    • Excellence in mathematics, and computer algorithm development, e.g. familiar with advanced signal processing, statistical and optimization
    • Programming skills with Matlab, R, Java, C/C++/C#, Perl, XML, and SQL using MySQL Server; and efficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems
    • 2+ years of experience in Bioinformatics and Plant Genomics
    • Experience in developing large-scale data analysis systems and scientific databases
    • Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET framework
