    BACKGROUND

    The Zhao Bioinformatics Lab at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. (http://www.noble.org) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow under the NSF award (http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=0960897) to investigate how genome scale transcriptional regulatory networks control gene expression. The project, entitled "Systems Bioinformatics Approaches to Modeling and Deciphering Plant Transcriptional Regulatory Networks" will address diversity and complexity of gene regulation in plant systems and regulatory networks among key regulatory elements, including transcription factors, microRNAs (miRNAs), trans-acting small interfering RNAs (ta-siRNAs), and emergent regulatory elements. Examples of our developed/published bioinformatics tool and data resource can be found on the project website at http://plantgrn.noble.org.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The successful candidate will join the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Xuechun Zhao to develop systems bioinformatics approaches to decipher plant transcriptional regulatory networks. The post-doc will focus on the development of novel algorithms for analyzing large scale Gene Regulation Networks (GRN), and for integration and mining of large-scale "omics" data; specific responsibilities include: 1) to develop graphical models to model and simulate plant transcriptional regulatory networks; 2) to develop novel computational algorithms to infer large-scale GRNs from high-throughput functional genomics data in model plants, 3) to develop software, including web servers, for GRN visualization, annotation and analysis, and 4) to perform genome-scale data analysis to construct and curate Arabidopsis Gene Regulation Networks (AGRNs) and Legume Gene Regulatory Networks (LGRNs).

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. degree in quantitative sciences, engineering or related life sciences field.
    • Independent problem solving skills.
    • Have good communication skills, strong team-work spirit, and self-learning abilities.

    PREFERENCES

    • Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Plant Biology, Genomics or highly-related field.
    • Knowledge about gene regulatory networks, graphical models such as the dynamic Bayesian networks.
    • Experience in developing large-scale data analysis systems.
    • 2+ years of experience in Bioinformatics and Plant Genomics.
    • Programming skills with Java, C/C++, Perl, XML, and SQL using MySQL Server; and efficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems.

    Duration of current Funding: 3 years
