RESPONSIBILITIES:
DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting Bioinformatics Systems Analyst position available for an experienced statistician. Will be responsible for analyzing and evaluating technical, complex production process problems and implementing systems to meet business and user requirements. Will utilize detailed skills and techniques in statistics, data mining, machine learning and pattern recognition to improve the JGI sequencing processes and data. Will exercise judgment to determine methods and procedures on statistical analysis and software development projects and demonstrate creativity and technical expertise to solve diverse and challenging problems. Position reports to the Quality Assurance / Quality Control group lead.
The selected candidate will be hired at the Software Developer 3 or 4 classification level depending upon the candidate's level of experience and qualifications.
Job Duties:
Essential-- Analyze and evaluate production process problems including problem definition, evaluation of requirements, and implementation of systems to meet business and user requirements.
- Develop and utilize detailed statistical, data mining, machine learning, and pattern recognition techniques and systems to improve the sequencing production process and data
- Develop statistically valid and efficient experimental designs for characterizing and improving performance of current and future sequencing technologies and develop corresponding data analysis methods
- Conduct root cause and statistical analysis to characterize sources of variability in the production line and determine the methods and tools necessary to remedy the problems.
- Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
- Work with scientific and administrative customers and collaborators to define needs and priorities;
- Define measurements necessary for controlling the quality of sequence data and defining systems required for recording and analyzing these measurements.
- Develop and improve tools to evaluate quality of data generated by various sequencing platforms and library types.
- Provide technical support to implement new sequence analysis pipelines.
- Provide high quality documentation for newly developed software and approaches.
- Provide coaching and mentoring in statistical analysis to other team members and groups.
- Investigate external data analysis tools and lead efforts to integrate them into our system.
- Stay current with production protocols and new sequencing technology.
- Work at a higher level of independence and responsibilities in carrying out assignments.
- Will serve as a technical lead and key contributor called upon to troubleshoot and solve highly technical, complex problems.
- Provide direction for project(s) and project team(s).
- Lead training in statistical analysis and promote rigorous statistical principles and practices in the production line.
Key Success Factors:
Essential-- B.S. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics or related field and five years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- In-depth understanding and expertise in statistics, machine learning, data mining, software development and mathematics
- Highly proficient with programming languages including PERL, C/C++, and Python in a Unix environment
- Demonstrated experience applying statistical and mathematical principles to solve technical problems
- Demonstrated experience in the collection, recording and analysis of complex experimental data
- Ability to test and monitor data; high attention to detail and ability to recognize data issues and discrepancies
- Ability to define and implement appropriate metrics for the evaluation of sequence data on next generation sequencing platforms
- Demonstrated experience with PC and Unix, specifically working with statistical software programs
- Ability to multi-task and work with a diverse group of scientific and technical personnel
- Ability to apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems
- Effective time management, organization and planning skills; talent for working well under pressure and handling multiple tasks and changing priorities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to produce high quality work under strict deadlines
- Background in biology, biochemistry, or DNA sequencing
- Advance degree
- B.S. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics or related field and eight years of experience: or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Extensive experience applying advanced statistical and mathematical principles to solve highly technical, complex problems
- Ability to assume responsibility for an entire project or team and work independently and flexibly in a diverse team environment
