Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Research Associate @ The Clemson University Genomics Institute--Clemson, SC (US)

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Clemson University Genomics Institute (CUGI) is a genomics and bioinformatics research and service Institute at Clemson University. We are seeking a bioinformatic associate to provide support for a variety of genomics projects. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with scientists at the Institute, but will also have the opportunity to lead projects and conduct research into new bioinformatic techniques and software. The successful applicant will be expected to present work and aid in publication of papers and writing grants.
Responsibilities:
- Work directly with CUGI customers and scientists in the collection, management, interpretation, and analysis of genomic data.
- Provide a variety of bioinformatic services including assembly and/or alignment of next generation sequencing data
- Develop websites that utilize a database back end and a CMS to efficiently disseminate genomic data and analysis results.
- Develop and maintain analysis pipeline code used to compare and analyze data; design and perform custom analyses as required.
- Assist in maintenance and development of internal information management software system and all computer software and hardware for CUGI staff.
- Continue education in genomics and bioinformatics in order to propose and implement new concepts and technical solutions.
REQUIREMENTS
- MS or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science and/or the life sciences
- Demonstrated experience in PHP and Perl in a UNIX/Linux environment
- Experience with a database platform such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Excellent communication and effective problem-solving skills and ability to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, prioritize and manage a variety of tasks, and shift priorities rapidly.
- Experience with analysis of next generation sequencing data
PREFERENCES
- Work experience in the field of bioinformatics that has led to proficiency with genomic and transcriptomic next generation sequencing, de novo assembly and reference alignment strategies Understanding of other genomic data types including genetic maps, QTLs, and physical maps.
- Experience in web site development. Previous experience with Drupal or other CMS strongly preferred.
- Experience performing statistical analysis on large biological data sets using a language such as R
