    Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Software Developer, Team Lead @ Medical Science & Computing, Inc.--Bethesda, MD (US)

    BACKGROUND

    Medical Science & Computing, Inc. is searching for a Bioinformatics Software Developer Team Lead to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC and it is on-site at NIH in Bethesda, MD.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Work cooperatively with the current software development team to:
    • Provide software development services to address the needs of life science researchers
    • Explore, experiment and recommend bioinformatics software and systems
    • Participate in the basic requirements collection, design review, coding, testing, troubleshooting and support for custom developed software solutions
    • Stay abreast on current and emerging software development technologies and tools

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Masters or a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related computational discipline
    • A minimum of 3 years of work experience in a bioinformatics research and software development environment, including at least 2 years of team lead or management experience
    • Author or co-author on peer-reviewed journal publications related to bioinformatics or computational science research
    • Ability to address business needs with effective and efficient technical solutions
    • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively
    • Understand principles of business and project management and effectively communicate technical concepts
    • Ability to grasp the broader picture of a subject, but also give attention to detail
    • Must be able to adapt in a dynamic work environment and co-operate with team members and clients from a broad range of disciplines and subject level expertise
    • Required experiences are:
    o Programming language: Java/J2EE
    o Scripting languages: Perl, Python or Shell
    o Relational database development: MySQL
    o Operating systems: Linux or Mac OS
    o Working knowledge of Genomics and/or Proteomics data analysis tools
    o Web development using modern frameworks such as Hibernate or Spring
    o Web Service implementation
    o Open source Bioinformatics packages such as BioJava or BioPerl
    o Documenting requirements
    • Preferred experiences are:
    o Large scale data analysis using R and/or Matlab
    o High performance computing cluster
    o Software development infrastructure setup and management
    o Project management
    o Team building and management
    • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Ability to work independently, be detail-oriented, and have excellent analytical skills
    • Demonstrate initiative in experimenting with new technologies
