    BACKGROUND

    Autism Speaks is an international non profit organization dedicated to funding biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We currently have a rewarding career opportunity as a Genetic Data Manager to manage all biological and genetic data for the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE) and ensure the integrity, quality and utility of datasets generated by autism researchers. The selected candidate will report to the Director of Autism Genomics in Los Angeles, CA.

    Responsibilities of the Genetic Data Manager include:
    • Develop internal business and application workflows regarding genetic sample and data management; work with Data Projects Team to develop and enhance inter-database connectivity
    • Manage storage and distribution of genotype data sets and generate clean, analysis-ready data sets for investigators
    • Provide reports and distribution statistics on existing data
    • Implement quality control procedures to ensure that data are complete, accurate, and meet stringent quality guidelines
    • Manage the genetic tracking database by converting data to uploadable files, uploading data, developing scripts to automate conversion of data, upgrading, installing and performing in-depth testing of analysis tools
    • Curate genetic data across a variety of databases
    Researcher Liaison:
    • Act as a key member of collaborative projects involving genetics
    • Answer researcher queries regarding AGRE genotype data and provide advice regarding use of the samples
    • Assist AGRE with review of genetic and genomics projects and in evaluating potential data systems
    • Assist in review of biospecimen repository needs

    REQUIREMENTS

    Education:
    Bachelor's degree in genetics, molecular biology, or related field. Master's degree preferred.

    Experience:
    5+ years' programming experience (such as PERL)
    3+ years' experience with two or more genetic data management & analysis platforms
    2+ years' experience in managing small and large scale genetic datasets are required

    Experience working with centralized genetic data repositories (e.g. GEO, dbGaP, NIMH Genetics) is required. (Experience with psychiatric genetics research is a plus). Experience with PC-based and Linux platforms; excellent analytic skills and ability to problem solve required.

    Specialized Skills/Knowledge:
    Candidates must have research expertise in the area of genetics & database management and working knowledge of SQL querying language & a programming language (PERL). Proficiency in using software for spreadsheets, presentations, email, internet and database management. Knowledge of federal & state regulations governing research with human subjects, including HIPAA requirements, is essential.

    Must possess excellent oral and written presentation skills, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with researchers, coordinators, Government agencies, co-workers, and other groups. Ability to analyze and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment is essential. Must be able to demonstrate a high degree of initiative and a commitment to service in support of the organization's mission.
