Opportunity: Post Doctoral Fellow, COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY & Metagenomics @ J. Craig Venter Institute--Rockville, MD (US)
Submitted by Julia Lang; posted on Tuesday, June 26, 2012

    BACKGROUND

    J. Craig Venter Institute, a dynamic, world leading scientific research institute is seeking to fill a Post Doctoral Fellow position. The successful candidate will be responsible for funded research projects including functional analysis in human microbiome and metagenomic projects, methods development for high-dimensional multivariate phenotype association analysis, and metagenomic biomarker discovery in human disease. JCVI is broadly engaged in multiple collaborative studies of the roles of the human microbiome in health and disease, with a focus on computational methods to characterize biomolecular functions within these microbial communities and their interactions with host immunity and genetics.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Post Doctoral Fellow research areas include studies of the human microbiome and quantitative methods development for the analysis of structured high-dimensional phenotypic, genetic, genomic, and metagenomic data. Specifically, we seek to determine links between microbial membership in the human nasopharyngeal cavity and Streptococcus pneumoniae carriage in the context of S. pneumoniae vaccine programs in developing countries. Additionally, due to the very high-dimensionality of the data sets to be generated (genetic (e.g. polymorphisms), genomic (e.g. gene expression), metagenomic, and phenotypic (e.g. disease status, biometrics, demographics, diet)), statistical methods controlling for false positive findings will be important. The candidate for this project will be responsible both for computational methods development and for these initial applications' analysis. The candidate should be broadly conversant with bioinformatic techniques for genomic data analysis and will collaborate closely with software developers for methods implementation and with experimental laboratories for validation of computational results.

    REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates will have a Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biology, or a related field; proficiency in statistical programming and/or scripting languages appropriate for scalable data analysis (e.g., R, Python, etc.); comfort and experience with programming for biological data analysis; familiarity with functional genetic and/or genomic data, as indicated by publication record; ability to communicate scientific material and collaborate well.

    LOCALE

The position will be located within the Infectious Diseases Program at the Rockville, MD JCVI campus.

    COMPENSATION

    TBD

JCVI offers an excellent working environment and a competitive benefits package.
