Opportunity: Post-Doctoral Fellow, COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY and BIOINFORMATICS @ J. Craig Venter Institute--San Diego, CA (US)
Submitted by Julia Lang; posted on Wednesday, June 27, 2012

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is looking for a Post-Doctoral Fellow specializing in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics to join its San Diego, CA location. The Post Doctoral Fellow will undertake metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities. Some portion of the position might also involve analyses of transcriptomic (mRNA and non-coding RNA) and protein interaction data (ChIP-Seq) for diatoms generated from next --generation sequencing platforms. Therefore, we are especially interested in development of analysis pipelines geared toward integrated analysis of next-generation sequencing data.

The successful candidate will report to Dr. Andrew Allen in the Microbial and Environmental Genomics group in our San Diego office. The Post Doctoral Fellow will be expected to initiate independent computational analyses related to evaluation of primary metabolism and patterns of genome evolution and adaptation in various marine environments. The successful candidate will work closely with research groups in the Bioinformatics and Environmental and Microbial Genomics groups at JCVI. We are especially interested in development of analysis pipelines geared toward identification and evolutionary analysis of genes, pathways, and populations responsible for influencing key components of major biogeochemical cycles. An overall theme within the JCVI group is the elucidation of links between molecular evolution, cellular metabolism, and ecosystem biogeochemistry.

    REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant scientific discipline plus a strong background in programming (Perl or Ruby, C/C++, Unix). Candidates should also have demonstrated interest and experience bioinformatics and microbial ecology and evolution.
