BACKGROUND
The Bioinformatics Programmer will join a growing team in the Center for Research Informatics (CRI) in the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) of the University of Chicago, working in the Bioinformatics Core. The candidate will work on both short- and long-term projects, assisting Researchers in various clinical research efforts as well as helping to build the BSD's overall infrastructure to support research informatics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Priorities and specifications will be determined by the Director, but the candidate will be expected to work independently, interact directly with Researchers as needed, and be able to work on multiple projects to meet deadlines. Numerous technologies are currently utilized and the candidate will participate in the selection and evaluation of new technologies to best suit the needs of the CRI. Tasks will include custom programming, data migration and validation, reporting from various information systems, creating new database schemas, evaluating and implementing open source software, and giving demonstrations of current projects. The group employs agile software development methodologies and the candidate should be comfortable working in such an environment.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree
- Three years of relevant programming experience in one or more of the following languages: Perl, Python, PHP, C#/NET, Java, SQL, XML, C++
- Experience in programming for parallel and distributed computing
- Experience in Linux/Unix
- Experience developing Web based and client/server applications
- Experience developing, implementing, debugging, and maintaining applications
- Experience with MSSQL, Oracle, or MySQL RDMS
- Experience in managing big datasets
PREFERENCES
- Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field
- Bioinformatics or biomedical expertise, or experience programming scientific applications
