BACKGROUND
The Center for Research Informatics (CRI) in the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) of the University of Chicago is seeking a PhD level Bioinformatician with strong credentials in grant writing and publication to be the Manager of Program Development & Bioinformatician.RESPONSIBILITIES
Works with the Chief Research Informatics Officer to advance key scientific initiatives for the Center for Research Informatics through program development, identifying and assisting in applying for external funding, facilitating collaborations across the University and with other institutions, drafting scientific papers and other key documents and presentations, engaging in training and outreach support for the CRI, and working directly with the Bioinformatics, Computing Infrastructure, and Clinical Informatics groups to support strategic research projects. Works with the bioinformatics core team to implement bioinformatics services for faculty in the Biological Sciences Division of the University of Chicago as a member of the Center for Research Informatics Bioinformatics Services Group.
All projects will be related to basic, translational or clinical research broadly defined and may include support for high through put genomic technologies. Responsible for developing and implementing software methodologies and computational tools as needed by project, keeping abreast of industry trends and new technologies and recommending potential solutions based on the latest technical developments. Devises or modifies procedures to solve complex problems and works at a high technical level in all phases of informatics support activities. Executes, tests, and rolls out project-specific solutions. Ensures projects are managed in a timely and efficient manner and are appropriately documented. Provides follow up support services after initial project completion.REQUIREMENTS
- Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, the Biological Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field
- Minimum of seven years of related experience
- Experience facilitating and promoting a research project or contributing to the scientific direction of a research resource
- Experience in the field of bioinformatics
- Grant writing experience
- Program development experience
- Experience using scripting languages such as Perl or Python
- Familiarity with Linux and/or UNIX
- Basic knowledge of molecular biology
- Basic knowledge of statistics
PREFERENCES
- Supervisory experience
- Experience in employing high performance computing to solve parallelizable compute problems
- Experience using scripting languages Java, SQL, XML, with C++, PHP, and/or JavaScript
- Experience providing bioinformatics services or other service roles
- Experience in project management
- Experience in the bioinformatics of high-throughput technologies sequencing
