BACKGROUND
One Bioinformatics Scientist position is available in the Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The successful candidate is expected to join a diverse bioinformatics team working on projects in cancer and other complex diseases using bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. The successful candidate should have experience analyzing high-throughput genomic datasets derived from microarray and next generation technologies as well as familiarity with available third party software packages useful to analyzing these data. The candidate is expected to work both independently on genomics data analysis and work closely with many investigators and/or collaborators who generate genomics data in the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the Principal Investigator with grant and manuscript preparation. Independently carries out and designs highly sophisticated and independent experiments involving bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. Mentors and trains post doctoral fellows and graduate students in developing their research projects and skills. Assists in the leadership and supervision of the Bioinformatics Resource Center research team.
REQUIREMENTS
This position requires a Doctorate degree and a minimum of 12 months of relevant experience. Substitution of experience for the minimum education requirement is not permitted.
Requirements:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related area
- Minimum one year of post-doctoral work experience in high-throughput genomic dataset analysis or related field(s)
- Proved skills in at least one programming language (Perl, R, Java)
- Familiarity with database building/searches
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent time management skills, especially involving the simultaneous management of multiple projects
- Leadership skills and ability to work well in a team environment
- Ability to work independently with a high level of self-motivation
