Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Scientist @ NGM Biopharmaceuticals -- South San Francisco, CA (US)
Submitted by Igenica, Inc.; posted on Wednesday, September 05, 2012

    BACKGROUND

NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. is committed to pursuing unexplored biological mechanisms in order to develop breakthrough biotherapeutics with the potential to redefine medical treatment practices and enhance outcomes. Relying on human clinical and genetic observations, the Company has established a unique discovery platform to identify and validate novel targets that impact the underlying etiology of metabolic diseases.

NGM's strategy is to elucidate the roles of these hormones and receptors in the systemic regulation of cardiometabolic diseases. With this holistic approach, NGM is generating a pipeline of innovative protein, peptide and antibody drug candidates as novel treatments for diseases such as diabetes, obesity, muscle wasting and cardiovascular disease.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

We are currently looking for a creative and highly motivated Bioinformaticist to contribute his/her superb technical skills and scientific expertise towards the discovery of transformational new therapeutics. The successful candidate will take a lead role in data mining, data visualization, statistical analysis, experimental design and database development to support genomics‐based discovery efforts at NGM. This individual will be responsible for developing and managing a computational genomics platform and the analysis of experimental data, enabling NGM's research objectives with a focus on the identification of therapeutic targets and biomarkers associated with the resolution of diabetes following gastric bypass surgery. As a member of a multidisciplinary research team, the bioinformaticist will:
    • Develop, in collaboration with researchers, an integrated analysis platform for genomics‐ based comparisons.
    • Design and apply bioinformatics algorithms including machine learning, dynamic programming or graphic algorithms and feature selection and pattern recognition algorithms to find predictive patterns and enable biomarker discoveries.
    • Develop and implement standardized protocols for data analysis and quality control of genomics experiments, including background correction algorithms, data normalization, principal component analysis, statistical inference methods, and clustering algorithms.
    • Provide statistical and computational tools for genomic analysis and measurement of RNA expression.
    • Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic, proteomic, or post‐ genomic databases.
    • Design and apply computer systems and databases used to organize and analyze large amounts of biological data.
    • Oversee and provide technical guidance to enable the design, development and maintenance of a biological database integrating data from diverse information sources.

    REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or life sciences‐related field and 5+ years of relevant experience in computational biology, including algorithm development, quality control data analysis and hands‐on data analysis. Knowledge of genomics and proteomics software / platforms and sequence databases is a prerequisite for this position. Experience in designing, developing and accessing software for genomics‐based methods, including integration with RNA and protein databases, is desirable. Strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a research team, are essential.
