Opportunity: Sr. Programmer Analyst/BIOINFORMATICS @ Columbia University -- New York, NY (US)

BACKGROUND
The Center for Infection and Immunity at the Mailman School of Public Health has an immediate opening for a Sr. Programmer Analyst in the Bioinformatics team. The successful applicant will provide bioinformatics support for ongoing research (multiple projects) in a large and dynamic laboratory consisting of 65 investigators at Columbia and a global network of researchers who work on projects related to infectious disease surveillance and discovery in humans and wildlife.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide bioinformatics support for ongoing research in virus detection and discovery in a large and dynamic laboratory – 80%
- Contribute to publications and research grants – 15%
- Perform other related duties as assigned – 5%
REQUIREMENTS
The candidate is expected to demonstrate the following skills:
- At least two to three years of experience in writing pipelines and analysis of next generation sequencing data especially from Illumina platform. The candidate should also be well versed in data QC, mapping, de-novo assembly and BLAST as well as understanding of algorithms behind them. Experience with the analysis of RNA-Seq data is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of genetics and molecular biology as well as practical knowledge of major bioinformatics tools and resources: NCBI, UCSC etc.
- The position requires the ability to work in Unix environments consisting of high performance clusters. The candidate should have a good understanding of multi-threading tools (SGE, MPI), resource management and allocation.
- At least two to three years of academic or industrial experience working with scripting languages, such as shell, Perl, Python or R. Desired qualifications include: applied mathematics/statistics/biostatistics background.
- The candidate will perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, or computer science and at least four years experience in bioinformatics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree with 3 years of related experience
