    ``Biology Direct is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal soon to be launched by BioMed Central. The journal will encompass all aspects of biology. The first subject areas to be launched will be Genomics, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology.

    ``Biology Direct aims to provide authors and readers of research articles with a novel system of peer review. To remove the journal's role in reviewer selection, the author will be responsible for obtaining three reviewers' reports, via the journal's Editorial Board. The process of peer review will be open, rather than anonymous, thus eliminating the principal sources of abuse in the refereeing process. The reviewers' reports will be public, increasing the responsibility of the referees and providing readers with pointers as to the content and value of a publication.''

I've thought for some years that reviewers should have their names in some part of the citation or on the first page of an article. Of course, for the sake of personal politics, the comments made by the reviewers should probably be anonymous until the article is published, if published. In any event, I feel confident that this is the way most publications will operate in the future. Openness and accountability will (or should) always be preferred by the scientific community.
