BACKGROUND
The newly founded Bioinformatics group at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universitaet in Jena, Germany is seeking three PhD students or PostDocs. The research focus of the group the mathematical and computer science foundations of biological problems. The research group will be established in Jena starting April 2006 with 4 PhD students.RESPONSIBILITIES
Focus of research is the development and evaluation of models and algorithms in current bioinformatics.
Proposed research topics are:
- Parametrized complexity of bioinformatics problems
- Reconstruction and analysis of metabolic networks and pathways
- Integration of gene cluster analysis into phylogenetic methods, modeling and algorithms for finding gene clusters with errors
- Finding regulatory motif patterns
- Computational mass spectrometry
- Compressed data structures
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must hold a diploma or Master degree in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, or Computer Science. Applicants must have a solid background in combinatorics and algorithm design, as well as an interest in interdisciplinary work (Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology). The ability to write code, preferably in C++ would be helpful.PREFERENCES
University education in one of the following: biology, molecular biology, genomics, genetics, biochemistry, physics. Experience with existing bioinformatics approaches. Good communication skills in English.TERMS
