BACKGROUND:
A Ph.D. studentship is available from the Department of Molecular Biosciences (IMBV) at the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo (BiO), UiO from June 1st, 2006 . (The starting date is negotiable.). The position has a duration of 4 years including 25 % teaching and supervision duties. Information about the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo may be obtained from http://www.biotek.uio.no . Information about the Department of Molecular Biosciences may be obtained from http://www.imbv.uio.no/programmer/. The position is financed by the Department of Molecular Biosciences.
For further information please contact: Dr. Ian Donaldson by e-mail (ian.donaldson at biotek.uio.no) and see:
http://www.biotek.uio.no/research_groups/donaldson_group.html
The purpose of the Ph.D. fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (cand.scient. or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate. Candidates who have submitted their M.Sc. thesis prior to the closing date may apply for the position. If appointed, successful completion of the degree is a prerequisite for taking up the position. Applicants may be requested to come for an interview. For more information see:
http://www.matnat.uio.no/english/research/research_edu/education.html.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The position is part of a new project that aims to model intracellular cell-signalling processes using autonomous agents. The position provides an excellent opportunity to work in a truly cross-disciplinary research field at the very edge of current technology and knowledge. The student will work in collaboration with researchers at BiO and the IMBV to model cellular processes and develop tools to facilitate this process. This work may involve using existing software (such as Ecell/SmartCell or Stochsim and/or developing new software and related tools.
The successful candidate will also be required to use a maximum of 25% of their time in teaching in relevant topics and supervision of masters students at IMBV.
REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate should have a M.Sc. in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field. Programming skills or experience with cell signalling pathways and associated experimental methods, bioinformatics resources, pathway model curation, SMBL, CellML or use of pathway modeling software is a strong asset but not required. However, a demonstrated interest in pathway modeling and of clear communication and analytic skills are essential. The candidate should have excellent organizational skills; ability to work independently for the common goal of a team, as well as to work interactively with experimentalists and other developers. Further information about the project may be obtained from Dr. Ian Donaldson by e-mail (ian.donaldson at biotek.uio.no).
TERMS:
Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional upon admission to the Faculty's research training programme. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than one month after taking up the position, and the admission approved within three months. For more information see:
