PRESS RELEASE: Announcing the creation of a global bioinformatics grid

HUDSON, Massachusetts-December 2002-The Bioinformatics Organization (Bioinformatics.Org) announces the creation of a global bioinformatics grid. The Bioinformatics.Org Grid (BiO Grid) is a loosely networked cluster of heterogeneous computing technologies that can be accessed by members of the Organization free of charge (membership is also free).
The BiO Grid expands the services of The Open Lab, a collection of free and/or open services for bioinformatics research, development and education. It will augment the mission of the Bioinformatics Organization: to lower the barrier to entering and participating in the field of bioinformatics.
Several for-profit businesses have already signed agreements on participating in the BiO Grid project, and other organizations have expressed an interest. More information on these collaborations will follow.
The BiO Grid project is part of the Co-Lab program at the Bioinformatics Organization. Through this program, the Organization hopes to involve numerous for-profit businesses and create a showroom of commercial bioinformatic products that will benefit both industry (by providing product exposure) and the community (by providing access to these products).

By providing free and open resources for research, development and education, the Bioinformatics Organization promotes freedom and openness in the field of bioinformatics. The Organization was established in 1998 and hopes to lower the barrier to entering and participating in the field of bioinformatics, as access to cutting-edge resources can be prohibitively expensive for those working individually, in small groups, at poorly-funded institutions or in developing nations. i was watching the movie Gattaca this weekend when bioinformatics popped into my head. i thought, 'wow, this stuff could be useful,' then i thought, 'wow, what a loss of privacy.' what do you think?
