    BACKGROUND:
    Lonza’s Advanced Protein Technologies (Lonza-APT) is a multidisciplinary department in Cambridge-UK pioneering the application of innovative solutions to the development of biopharmaceuticals with a primary focus in addressing manufacturability, stability and aggregation. At APT we are looking for a highly motivated and talented person to lead our Computational Biology team in Cambridge, UK.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The major responsibilities for this position include:
    • Supervise other scientists within the Computational Biology Group at APT in Cambridge
    • Oversee the development and application of APT’s in silico platform, expanding software functionalities in the areas of prediction of protein aggregation & stability, protein engineering, etc.
    • Co-ordinate efforts with our experimentalist teams within APT (protein engineering & cell biology) in development as well as customer projects
    • Co-ordinate efforts with our Bioinformatics Services sister department in Mumbai to develop new tools and knowledge bases
    • Oversee the general provision of in silico services to customers, participating in presentations on technology and scientific discussions
    • Participate actively in service projects and collaborations involving protein improvement and stabilisation
    • Co-ordinate research activities to consolidate and enhance APT’s current platform technology
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Qualifications:
    • Doctoral Degree (PhD) or Masters Degree (MSc) in Bioinformatics, Computational chemistry / biochemistry, or in Biological Sciences / biochemistry, with relevant experience in computational analysis of proteins or structural bioinformatics
    • Significant experience in research and development, preferably in an industrial environment.
    Essential Skills:
    • Previous experience in supervisory roles, preferably in industry
    • Good background in protein structure & structural bioinformatics
    • Previous experience in protein structural modelling and molecular dynamics simulations
    • Familiarity with Linux & unix platforms
    • Experience in scripting and programming, particularly in Perl (desirable C++)
    Desirable Skills:
    • Familiarity with antibody structure and bioinformatics tools related to antibodies
    • Familiarity with the use of machine learning techniques (SVM, NN, etc.) and/or statistical analysis tools (R, etc.)
    • Previous experience in characterisation of protein-protein interactions and protein docking techniques.
    • Experience with relational databases (SQL, etc.)
    • Experience in version controlling software (CVS)

    • A team player, able to share knowledge and manage others effectively
    • Effective in co-ordinating projects, distributing tasks and organising resources according to an established plan and to prioritise work to meet tight deadlines
