BACKGROUND
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated is a global biotechnology company committed to the discovery and development of breakthrough small molecule drugs for serious diseases. The Company's strategy is to commercialize its products both independently and in collaboration with major pharmaceutical companies. Vertex's product pipeline is focused on viral diseases, cystic fibrosis, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and pain. The Knowledge Management group is developing systems to acquire, integrate, and interpret the critical internal and external information sources that enable drug discovery and development.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The group currently seeks a Research Scientist to assist in assembling a knowledge engineering infrastructure and incorporate unstructured text data into its knowledge base.

Collect, or if necessary create, ontologies and thesauri relevant to Vertex’s scientific and business interests.

Assemble computational components to develop a natural language processing engine.

Incorporate text mining capability into workflows or automated pipelines to address questions encountered in drug discovery and development.

Build a knowledgebase of results obtained through text mining

Work with functional groups throughout the company to identify applications for text mining systems.
REQUIREMENTS
A higher degree (preferably a Ph.D.) in biomedical sciences and a thorough knowledge of information sources that are important for drug discovery and development. In addition, 2-3 years of experience working in the text mining area and familiarity with major text mining technologies and applications, such as biomedical ontologies, RDF, SPARQL, OWL, UMLS, MetaMap, Linguamatics, Taverna, etc.
