    BACKGROUND

Expressions of interest are invited for research positions in genetic statistics and medical bioinformatics. These new positions are supported by a five-year NHMRC funded project to construct a new national training facility in medical bioinformatics and genetic statistics รข?? the Australian Medical Bioinformatics Resource (AMBeR) - and to enhance the national capacity in these fields. AMBeR positions are available in research groups from: the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, the University of Western Australia, the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, and the Menzies Research Institute in Hobart.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful applicants will interact with researchers from diverse biological, clinical, computational and statistical backgrounds, and will play a key role in conducting advanced research into bioinformatic and biostatistical methods and bringing new methods to bear on important medical research problems. Research areas will also include modeling correlated data structures, gene mapping, causal pathway modeling, construction of data ontogenies, spatial analysis, meta-analysis and data linkage analysis within complex datasets. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to conduct research in collaboration with internationally recognized experts in genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics, genetic statistics and biostatistics, and will be encouraged and supported to travel between collaborating research centres in Western Australia, New South Wales,
    Victoria and Tasmania.

    REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have a degree, preferably post-graduate, in epidemiology, human genetics, statistics, mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering or biostatistics. Applicants with degrees in biology, genetics, molecular biology or other related areas who have substantial computational or statistical expertise are also encouraged to apply.

    TERMS

It is anticipated that the initial appointment will be for up to 2 years with the possibility of extension. Starting salary will be negotiable depending on relevant experience and qualifications.
