Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICIAN, Protein Interaction Analysis (#HD_00061) @ EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory)--Heidelberg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL HR Recruitment; posted on Thursday, February 17, 2011 (1 comment)

    BACKGROUND

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

We are seeking a Bioinformatician to join the group of Anne-Claude Gavin at EMBL to develop and implement the tools to analyze the large interaction datasets produced. This experimentalist group is applying large-scale biochemical approaches aiming at charting biomolecular networks and understanding complex biological systems. The group has international recognition for its work on the genome-wide characterization of protein complexes in a variety of model organism, ranging from the eukaryote, yeast to the prokaryote, M. pneumoniae.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Gavin Group is looking to recruit a Bioinformatician to organize, support and further develop the general computational technologies in the laboratory. Data acquisition, management and analysis are an integral and central parts of the approaches we apply to chart biologically relevant networks. We expect the successful candidate to actively and independently participate to ongoing experimental projects. This includes, at early stages, contribution to the design of the experiments and later on, integration of the various datasets in coherent frames. Another important activity of the group is to interface with experimental scientists and provide help and training.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Qualified candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. degree, applicants with a Masters degree in combination with relevant experience will also be considered.
    • The candidate must be able to work in a systematic and organized way.
    • Familiarity with scripting languages is expected, for example Python, Perl or R.
    • Familiarity with UNIX-based OSes is desirable.
    • Knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology or cell biology is a plus.
    • The ability to work in a team and good communication skills in English are mandatory.

    Team Leader - Computational Biology/Bioinformatics
Submitted by EMBL HR Recruitment; posted on Tuesday, May 17, 2011
Location: Heidelberg, Germany Staff Category: Staff Member Contract Duration: 5 years Grading: 8 Closing Date: 19 June 2011 Reference number: HD_00084 Job Description The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The Structural and Computational Biology Unit seeks to recruit an outstanding team leader in computational biology or bioinformatics working in areas such as data integration, structural bioinformatics, image analysis or visualization. The team would be at the interface between service and research, collaborating with and supporting experimental groups in the organization and interpretation of heterogeneous data. It is desirable that the activities complement and are synergistic to existing research in the unit. The vision of the unit is to integrate the various structural biology approaches (Xray, NMR, electron microscopy, tomography and light microscopy) with computational, chemical and systems biology. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong motivation to work in the multidisciplinary and collaborative environment of EMBL, reaching out to the many other computational and experimental groups. There are many interesting opportunities, and a strong need, to integrate and streamline the multiple computational approaches being followed within EMBL. Further information about research in the Structural and Computational Biology Unit and at EMBL can be found at the EMBL web page (www.embl.de). Application Instructions Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs In your application, please include a Cover Letter, CV and a concise description of research interests & future research plans. Please also arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be emailed to: references@embl.de at the latest by 19 June 2011. Additional Information For further information about the position please contact recruitment@embl.org. Interviews are planned for 20, 21 and 22 July 2011 (however, dates can be flexible or subject to change depending on circumstances at the time). EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. Information on Team/Group Leader appointments can be found under http://www.embl.org/gl_faq. Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
