The planned research will focus on gene and genome evolution, and especially on the fine detail of mutation. Sequences will be analysed to develop a broad base of knowledge about virus mutation, genome complexity, diversity and evolution. New DNA probes will be designed for detecting and distinguishing the viruses. A collaborating research team will test the probe designs in laboratory experiments. The Scholarship is an Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) associated with an ARC Linkage Project on detecting and identifying arboviruses using a combinatorial system. The student will be enrolled in the School of Botany and Zoology at the Australian National University and will work in the laboratory of Dr Mark Gibbs.CAREER PROSPECTS
The student will develop a strong background in bioinformatics, phylogenetics and virology and would be suited for a future career in research, including medical research, or in a related industry or public service role.ELIGIBILITY
Experience in gene or genome sequence analysis is required. Strong computer competency is also required. The student must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia and eligible for admission to a PhD program at the Australian National University: BSc with honours (1st class or high 2A) or a Graduate Diploma or Masters degree or demonstrated research experience.
Students with experience of sequence analysis or comparison are encouraged to apply. Experience may have been gained through work in bioinformatics, phylogenetics, genomics, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology or virology. The stipend will be AU$28,000 (2004 rate) per annum tax exempt.
