To keep up with rapid growth at the Biomedical Sequencing Facility, we are hiring a Next Generation Sequencing Technician / Technologist to join our team. The successful candidate will operate the latest genome sequencing equipment and contribute to cutting-edge biomedical research and service provision for biomedical research and whole genome medicine. The Biomedical Sequencing Facility is Austria's first and leading center of expertise for next generation sequencing in biomedicine. It is run as a joint endeavor of the Medical University of Vienna and the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The Candidate:
We are looking for highly motivated, well-organized, and hard-working candidates who feel comfortable working in a dynamic and demanding environment. The work involves handling a large number of collaborations and clients in parallel, thus requiring the ability to effectively multi-task, combined with stress resistance, high accuracy, friendliness and professional behavior, and a collaborative mindset. A typical candidate would have a Bachelor or Master degree in the life sciences and prior experience doing wet-lab work in a demanding environment. Candidates with a TA/MTA diploma or with a PhD will also be considered. Prior experience with next generation sequencing or DNA-based diagnostics is a plus (but not mandatory). Tasks and pay are commensurable with experience and skills. We take career development of our staff seriously at CeMM. Typical Tasks:

Running the sequencers. Operating the Illumina HiSeq/MiSeq sequencers on a routine basis at the best possible quality
Library preparation. Preparing samples for genome, epigenome, and transcriptome sequencing (manually or using robotics)
Collaborations and customer support. Interacting with researchers who send their samples for sequencing
Troubleshooting. Detecting and resolving technical problems with the machines and with low-quality samples
Protocol optimization. Establishing and testing new protocols, often in close collaboration with customers
Lab management. Keeping track of samples and stocks, contributing to order management and service billing
Training and outreach. Contributing to workshops and teaching collaborating scientists how to prepare their samples
Genom Austria. Depending on interest, work with CeMM's citizen science project on personal genomes could be part of the job

The Biomedical Sequencing Facility (http://cemm.at/research/groups/biomedical-sequencing-facility-bsf/):
The successful candidate will be part of the team of the Biomedical Sequencing Facility (BSF), which is based at CeMM. The BSF was Austria's first (and is still the largest) technology platform and academic service provider dedicated to next generation sequencing in biomedicine. It is a non-commercial service unit jointly operated by the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Vienna. Under the leadership of Christoph Bock and with a dedicated team of staff scientists, the BSF contributes to biomedical research and whole genome medicine in Vienna, Austria, and beyond (international clients include leading institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge University, the German Cancer Research Center, and the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer). The BSF is equipped with several Illumina high-throughput sequencers (2x HiSeq 3000/4000 series, 2x HiSeq 2000 series), with the MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore platforms, and with a 96-well robotics platform that supports automated library preparation for genomes, epigenomes and transcriptomes. The computational infrastructure of the BSF comprises a scientific computing cluster that is upgraded annually to keep pace with steeply increasing amounts of data generation (current status: >100 CPUs, >1,000 cores, >10 TB memory, >1,000 TB storage). The BSF focuses on technologies with direct relevance to biomedicine and currently offers genome, epigenome and transcriptome sequencing services for biomedical research. Furthermore, it supports biomedical scientists and clinicians in the development of custom NGS protocols and in the bioinformatic analysis of the resulting datasets.
