BACKGROUND

The University of Illinois has recently created a High-Performance Biological Computing group (HPCBio) tasked with providing computational infrastructure, support, training and applied R&D capability to its biomedical research community. HPCBio is a joint venture of the Carver Biotechnology Center, the Institute for Genomic Biology and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. It offers a unique environment to leverage diverse high-performance computing environments including Blue Waters, the largest academic computer in the US, for computational genomics research and user support. It is engaging with a rapidly growing network of collaborators to develop a distributed cyberinfrastructure for genomics research.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The University has three positions available to work in the HPCBio group:

1. Senior Research Scientist- NCSA (A1200471), whose primary functions will be to analyze and implement strategies to develop and support computational genomics research; design and develop in-house bioinformatics tools; evaluate and integrate community-developed bioinformatics tools; and act as the primary liaison with off-campus collaborators.

2. A Technical Lead, Software and Databases - Biotechnology Center (A1200475), whose primary responsibilities will be to oversee the development and maintenance of a software stack serving the research needs of the University of Illinois faculty and staff in the area of bioinformatics and computational genomics; design and implement a software, networking and hardware environment enabling transparent sharing of computational resources for biological research across campus; participate in applied research projects in computational genomics, including the writing of grant proposals.

3. A Research Specialist in Life Sciences Bioinformatics - Biotechnology Center (A1200477), whose primary responsibilities will be to assist faculty and staff with the analysis of their experimental data; design and implement strategies and workflows to analyze various high-throughput datasets; support the data management and analysis needs of the High-Throughput Sequencing Unit of the Biotechnology Center.

REQUIREMENTS

Required Education & Training:

An MS or higher degree in a field of science relevant to bioinformatics is required for all three positions. Preferred degree fields are bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, molecular genetics or biotechnology. Alternative degree fields may be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.

COMPENSATION

These are regular academic professional positions at the University of Illinois (NCSA and Carver Biotechnology Center) and are renewable 12-month, 100%-time appointments with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
