    Opportunity: ASSOCIATE COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST at the Broad Institute--Cambridge, MA (US)

    BACKGROUND

    The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seeks a ASSOCIATE COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST, to assist in performing computational analysis of microbial genome sequences by developing and supporting tools, maintaining genomic data sets and databases, integrating tools and databases into existing high-throughput pipelines, and facilitating the display of results.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The research will concentrate on applying sequence analysis and utilizing phylogenetic and population genetics methodologies to questions in viral biology as well as in support of viral sequencing technology development. Will run bioinformatics jobs to support analysis and participate in and contribute to a dynamic scientific community. Duties include performing timely and accurate bioinformatic analysis to aid researchers in the Genome Sequencing and Analysis Program in performing computational analysis of viral genomes; maintain, support, and document shared tools, code base, and data sets for computational analysis; support relational database for storing genome data and analysis results; work with researchers to define and implement bioinformatics analysis tools; interact with external collaborators; prepare analytical results for presentation in various contexts including group meetings, funding agency reports, and journal publications; and perform related tasks as requested.

    REQUIREMENTS

    a bachelor's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field; at least two years' experience; excellent communication skills; outstanding personal initiative; and ability to work effectively as part of a team. Proficiency with some combination of the following programming languages required: Perl, Java, C, or Python. Experience with relational databases and SQL also required. Experience with standard phylogenetic tools highly desired (e.g., PAUP, PAML, Mr. Bayes, or PhyML). Experience managing large-scale data sets also desired. Demonstrated interest in bioinformatics and common bioinformatics tools (Blast, HMMer, etc.) needed.
