    EMBOSS seeks funding as UK Human Genome Mapping Project Resource Centre closes down

    By the end of July 2005, the United Kingdom Medical Research Council will close down [1] the bioinformatics group at the Rosalind Franklin Centre for Genomics Research [2] (formerly the Human Genome Mapping Project Resource Centre).

    ``This is coming at a particularly irritating point, because EMBOSS [3] has been going from strength to strength,'' Bleasby [EMBOSS coordinator and head of the proteomics applications group at the RFCGR] said. Projects in the pipeline include a new indexing system, interactive graphics, an EMBOSS ontology, and the provision of EMBOSS web services and workflows as part of the myGrid and Taverna projects. The closure of the RFCGR group will affect several of these directly and the others indirectly, Bleasby said.

    Submitter I can't imagine this is a serious problem, probably more of an irritation, as Dr. Bleasby puts it. AFAIK, bioinformatics is pretty well funded in Europe. EMBOSS will simply have to find a new home in Europe, and I'm sure that more than a few labs there would be glad to have it.
